In 2001, Dr Escobedo brought her considerable leadership skills to a large and growing neonatology service at OU Medical Center as the Children's Medical Research Institute's Reba McEntire Endowed Chair. She is active in a multitude of national and international leadership activities and was even elected as the first female Chair of the Perinatal Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Upon her arrival in Oklahoma, Dr Escobedo established an active subspecialty training program for neonatologists. In 2003, she was awarded the Neonatal Education Award in Perinatal Pediatrics by the American Academy of Pediatrics to recognize her outstanding contributions to Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. She also received the 2003 SSPR Ross Award in Pediatric Education as a role-model and outstanding educator in pediatric medicine. She has also received multiple awards of exceptional teaching from her students.
She serves in multiple capacities on the national and international level, including the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the NeoPrep committee, the steering committee for the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, the co-chair of the committee on Global Issues in Neonatal Resuscitation, the institutional representative for the Southern Society for Pediatric Research, the Editorial Board for NeoReviews, the Board of Directors for the National Perinatal Information Center, and the Board of Trustees for OU Medical Center.
She is best known for her research in respiratory care, particularly for the development of a premature baboon bronchopulmonary dysplasia model, a research resource which has produced a wealth of knowledge on both prevention and treatment. She organized CliNeTex, an association of institutions in Texas that works together to conduct clinical research about newborns.
