THIRD-YEAR MEDICAL STUDENT EDUCATION
All third-year medical students at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine spend 6 weeks on a Pediatric Clerkship. Three weeks are spent on the inpatient wards, one week in newborn nursery, one week in a general pediatric clinic, and one week in a subspecialty clinic.
The aim of the Neonatal-Perinatal program for medical students is to provide educational opportunities for achieving excellence in clinical newborn medicine, especially common newborn problems, delivery attendance and newborn resuscitation, and thorough physical exam skills.
Students are given access to Blackboard to round out their educational experience. Here, they have access to reading materials, video presentations, and patient cases to gain further experience in newborn medicine.
For 2008-2009, Dr Kimberly Ernst is the Director for the Student Program in Neonatal Medicine and Dr Mark Fergeson is the Director for the Pediatric Clerkship Program.
FOURTH-YEAR MEDICAL STUDENT EDUCATION
We offer a fourth-year elective month for any student interested in learning about newborn medicine in greater detail than can be afforded during the one-week rotation during their third year. Educational opportunities are available in the following areas:
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
- Newborn Village (NICU Step-Down Unit)
- Newborn Nursery
- Prenatal Consultation, Resuscitation, and Transition
- Lactation
- Research
- Advocacy
- Mixture of any of the above
The student will meet with Dr Ernst a couple of weeks prior to starting their rotation to discuss which of the opportunities they would like to pursue. Although the rotation will have some basic structure, the focus is on the student participating in those activities in which they desire more in-depth training.
For 2008-2009, Dr Kimberly Ernst is the Director for the Student Program in Neonatal Medicine and Dr Mark Fergeson is the Director for the Pediatric 4th Year Program.
Contact Saul Magana, the Education Coordinator in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, about any of these opportunities via e-mail or phone (271-5215).
