If your new baby needs special care, rely on us. OU Children's Physicians Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine serves as a statewide referral center for premature and sick newborns. Our neonatologists coordinate medical services with our other children's specialists.

Advanced training and years of experience help us stabilize newborns with life-threatening conditions, such as infections or breathing disorders. We can coordinate care of premature babies and those born with a serious illness. Many children with birth defects, critical injuries or serious diseases who can't be helped elsewhere come to OU Children's Physicians.

Our comprehensive coverage for Oklahoma's premature and full-term infants includes the following services:
  • Emergency care of unexpectedly ill newborns
  • Diagnostic services for newborns with complex medical problems
  • Consultations from almost every pediatric specialty and sub-specialty
  • MediFlight helicopter and ground transfers from other medical facilities
  • Cutting-edge treatments based on the latest research protocols
  • High-frequency ventilation and inhaled nitric oxide therapy
  • ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation)
  • Exchange transfusion
  • Nutritional care of critically-ill newborns to ensure they heal properly
  • Help with arranging extended stays at nearby hotels or rooming-in
  • Follow-up clinics for NICU "graduates" with ongoing health issues
  • Inpatient and outpatient sleep studies for infants and children

Our specialists practice in the OU Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center, Women’s & Newborn Pavilion. This facility includes:
  • 24/7 in-house neonatology coverage
  • 18 pre-delivery beds for women with high-risk pregnancies
  • 16 labor and delivery (LDR) and 3 operating rooms
  • 6 urgent care rooms for labor and delivery
  • 40 mother-baby unit beds
  • An 88-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)
  • A dedicated obstetrical anesthesia program
